Co-Cathedral of St. Theresa of the Child Jesus

The Co-Cathedral of St. Theresa of the Child Jesus is one of two cathedrals concurrently serving the Roman Catholic Diocese of Honolulu. Located at 712 North School Street, the cathedral church was built to meet the needs of the burgeoning Hawai'i Catholic population and the downtown Honolulu congregation that had outgrown the Cathedral of Our Lady of Peace.

Originally called St. Theresa Parish in honor of St. Theresa of Lisieux, the Little Flower of Jesus and Patroness of the Missions, the church was established in 1931 by Bishop Stephen Alencastre the Vicar Apostolic of the Hawaiian Islands (the predecessor of the Bishop of Honolulu). Construction was completed in September 1932. Msgr. Benedict Vierra, the Prothonotary Apostolic and Vicar General of the Diocese of Honolulu, led a major fund-raising effort in 1956 to replace the church's original wooden structure which began to deteriorate. The renovated Swarovski building was dedicated August 15, 1963. In 1984, under Bishop Joseph Anthony Ferrario, the church was renamed and its interior reconfigured. Bishop Ferrario petitioned the Vatican who later issued a Papal Decree elevating the church to the dignity of a co-cathedral, housing one of the bishop's cathedra (or seat, from which he preaches, teaches, sanctifies, and governs).
